From 27th February to 1st March, 1915 the 4th Rifle Brigade of 80 Brigade, 27th Division, were in trenches at St Eloi, just to the south of Ypres before returning to billets in Dickebusch. Since the last time they had been in these trenches at the beginning of February, conditions had considerably worsened. The enemy had sapped down to within 25 yards of two of the trenches and were able to bomb and snipe the British positions with far greater effect. As a consequence the battalion sustained over 40 casualties during the 2 days they spent here. One of these was John Brennan who was killed on 1st March. |
